14 Commandments to Eliminate Gang Sheet Upload Errors
Better Files = Better Prints.
Your design can look absolutely perfect on your computer and still produce a disappointing garment.
Why?
Because DTF printing doesn't print what you intended. It prints the file you actually uploaded.
A missing transparent background.
A low-resolution image.
An incorrectly sized canvas.
A hidden white box.
A microscopic line.
A screenshot stretched beyond its original resolution.
Any one of these mistakes can create production delays, wasted material, or a print that doesn't look anything like the artwork on your screen.
The good news?
Most of these problems are completely avoidable.
Before you upload your next gang sheet, run through these 14 commandments of professional DTF file preparation.
THE 14 COMMANDMENTS OF DTF FILE ENGINEERING
1. USE THE EXACT 24-INCH SHEET WIDTH
Our standard gang sheet production width is 24 inches.
Set your working canvas to the correct physical width before placing your artwork.
This prevents accidental resizing, clipping and unexpected proportions during production.
Your starting point:
Canvas Width: 24 Inches
Don't design first and try to force everything onto the production canvas afterward.
Build the file correctly from the beginning.
2. WORK AT A TRUE 300 DPI
Resolution matters.
A graphic that looks sharp at a small size on your monitor can become visibly pixelated when enlarged onto a hoodie or oversized streetwear garment.
For professional DTF artwork, use:
300 DPI
And ideally create your artwork at—or close to—the actual physical size you intend to print.
Remember:
300 DPI doesn't magically repair a bad image.
If you take a tiny 72-DPI screenshot and simply change the document settings to 300 DPI, you haven't created additional detail.
You've only changed the number.
Start with high-quality source artwork.
3. EXPORT AS A TRANSPARENT PNG-24
Your DTF artwork should contain the design—not the background surrounding the design.
Use:
PNG-24 + transparent alpha channel
This allows the production system to identify the actual graphic boundaries correctly.
A JPEG containing a white background is not the same thing as a transparent design.
If you upload a white rectangle behind your logo, the printer can interpret that rectangle as part of the artwork.
The result?
A giant white box around your design.
Always inspect the transparency before exporting.
4. PREPARE YOUR COLOR MODE CORRECTLY
Color management begins with your design file.
For professional production, work within the appropriate CMYK color environment and use the correct color profile for your workflow.
This helps create a more predictable transition between:
Digital Artwork → Production RIP → Physical Ink
Remember that your monitor produces color using light, while your garment receives physical pigment.
That means some extremely bright RGB colors cannot be reproduced identically in a conventional physical ink system.

5. MAINTAIN THE 0.5-INCH SPACING RULE
Efficiency does not mean placing every graphic directly against another graphic.
You need enough room to safely separate the designs after printing.
Maintain a minimum 0.5-inch spacing buffer between independent graphics.
This gives your cutting process a clean channel and reduces the risk of accidentally slicing into neighboring artwork.
Think of the space between designs as a production safety lane.
Don't eliminate it just to squeeze in one more graphic.
6. NEVER UPLOAD SCREENSHOTS
This one is simple.
Don't use screenshots as production artwork.
Screenshots are designed for viewing on a screen—not for high-resolution physical reproduction.
A screenshot may contain:
- Reduced resolution
- Compression artifacts
- Unwanted interface elements
- Incorrect dimensions
- Soft edges
- Color inconsistencies
If you need to print a logo, illustration or graphic, obtain the original artwork.
Upload the source—not the screenshot of the source.
7. DON'T STRETCH LOW-RESOLUTION ARTWORK
One of the fastest ways to destroy print quality is taking a small image and dramatically enlarging it.
For example:
A small web image may look perfectly acceptable on a phone.
Stretch it to a 14-inch back print and suddenly every pixel becomes visible.
You'll see:
- Blurry edges
- Pixelation
- Jagged typography
- Soft details
- Poorly defined shapes
Whenever possible, create or export artwork at the actual size you intend to print.
8. DELETE EVERY HIDDEN WHITE BACKGROUND
This is one of the most common file-preparation mistakes.
Your artwork may appear transparent because your design software displays a checkerboard behind it.
But don't assume.
Inspect the actual layer structure.
If there is a white rectangle beneath your logo, delete it.
If there is a hidden background layer, remove it.
If a mockup contains a white shirt behind your design, remove the shirt.
Upload:
The artwork.
Don't upload:
The presentation surrounding the artwork.
9. KEEP FINE LINES AT LEAST 0.02 INCH / 0.5 MM
Extremely thin artwork elements can become difficult to reproduce consistently.
Fine typography, decorative lines and tiny graphic details need enough physical structure for the transfer's adhesive powder layer to properly support them.
Maintain a minimum structural line thickness of approximately:
0.02 inch / 0.5 mm
This is particularly important for:
- Tiny text
- Fine outlines
- Hairline illustrations
- Small logos
- Narrow typography
- Decorative borders
If a line looks almost invisible on your screen, don't assume it will become beautifully precise on fabric.
Design for physical production—not just digital appearance.
10. REMOVE ALL MOCKUPS BEFORE UPLOADING
A mockup is excellent for marketing.
It is terrible as a production file.
Your digital presentation might show:
- A model wearing the shirt
- A folded garment
- Shirt shadows
- Fabric wrinkles
- A hanger
- Background scenery
- Lighting effects
None of those belong on your gang sheet.
Before exporting, strip everything away except the actual artwork.
Your production file should contain:
Pure artwork + transparency.
Nothing else.
11. CHECK THE PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS
Never rely exclusively on how large a design looks on your monitor.
A design that appears perfect on screen may be physically much smaller or larger than you intended.
Before exporting:
- Measure the garment.
- Decide the exact print width and height.
- Set your artwork to those physical dimensions.
- Check the final size again before uploading.
For example, don't simply write "large back print."
Decide exactly what large means in inches.
That makes your production repeatable.
12. PROOFREAD EVERY WORD
This sounds obvious.
It isn't.
A spelling mistake that costs thirty seconds to correct in Photoshop can become an expensive production mistake once the transfer has been printed.
Before submission, inspect every:
- Brand name
- Slogan
- Date
- Number
- Product name
- Sleeve message
- Neck label
- Small typography element
Use the 100% zoom test.
Don't only look at the entire gang sheet.
Zoom into every individual graphic and read every word.
Once it's printed and pressed, Photoshop can't save you.
13. NEVER RELY ON LOW-QUALITY WEB EXPORTS
Free design tools and online platforms can be useful for creating concepts.
The problem begins when you download a heavily compressed, low-resolution version of your artwork and then expect professional DTF production to turn it into a premium print.
Whenever possible, export from the original high-quality source file.
Use the highest-quality export available.
Avoid unnecessary compression.
Preserve transparency.
Preserve resolution.
Preserve the original artwork architecture.
14. USE THE TETRIS METHOD
Finally, don't waste your sheet.
Once your primary graphics are positioned, examine every available pocket of negative space.
Can you fit:
- Custom neck labels?
- Sleeve logos?
- Pocket graphics?
- Small brand marks?
- Hem tags?
- Collection identifiers?
If yes, use that space.
This is the Tetris Method.
Start with the large anchor graphics.
Then fill the remaining areas with smaller assets while maintaining the required 0.5-inch cutting separation.
You're paying for the sheet.
Use as much of the usable sheet as intelligently possible.

Before pressing UPLOAD, verify every box:
FILE ENGINEERING
- 🟢 24-inch canvas width
- 🟢 300 DPI
- 🟢 PNG-24
- 🟢 Transparent alpha channel
- 🟢 Correct color mode
- 🟢 Correct physical dimensions
ARTWORK QUALITY
- 🟢 No screenshots
- 🟢 No low-resolution images
- 🟢 No stretched artwork
- 🟢 No hidden white backgrounds
- 🟢 No mockups
- 🟢 No unnecessary transparency
- 🟢 Fine lines at least 0.02" / 0.5 mm
LAYOUT
- 🟢 0.5-inch separation between designs
- 🟢 Primary graphics positioned first
- 🟢 Negative space intelligently filled
- 🟢 Neck labels and sleeve hits included where appropriate
- 🟢 No overlapping artwork
FINAL QUALITY CONTROL
- 🟢 Spelling checked
- 🟢 Artwork inspected at 100%
- 🟢 Physical dimensions confirmed
- 🟢 Transparency inspected
- 🟢 Final export opened and reviewed before submission

WHY FILE ENGINEERING MATTERS
The most expensive production problem isn't always a printer malfunction.
Sometimes it's a file that should never have entered production.
A technically incorrect file can create:
Upload errors → Production delays → Wasted material → Missed launch dates → Lost revenue
That's why professional apparel brands treat artwork preparation as part of manufacturing—not as an afterthought.
Your designer creates the idea.
Your file engineering determines whether that idea survives production.
BETTER FILES. BETTER PRINTS.
Take two extra minutes before submitting your next gang sheet.
Check the resolution.
Check the transparency.
Check the dimensions.
Check the spacing.
Check the spelling.
Then check it one more time.
Those few minutes can protect an entire production run.
